La Gata Encantada

La Gata Encantada is the name of a pub in a novel by John Varley. It means 'the enchanted cat'. I like cats, so I stole the sign (it just needed some revarnishing and - Look! Good as new!). The door is open, to an amber glow and the sound of music and good fellowship. Come on in.

Guessing Game (Part III)

Having won Stephanie's guessing game, it behooves me to start the next one, I guess, so here goes:

I'm thinking of a book; you've probably read it; it's a fantasy novel.

You may ask yes/no questions ("Are there elves in it?" - "No") or multiple choicers. If your question as framed makes my answers ambiguous, I will either tell you so, or ignore you blissfully.

The answers to Steph's initial questions are as follows:

Are there elves? They aren't called that, but yes.

It does not feature one predominant hero, with or without backing group - there is an ensemble cast.

There is a quest to save the world.

There is more than one reality/plane/area of existence - in fairness, I have to say that this was a bit tricky to answer.

None of the action is set on 'Earth'.

'Earth' is not one of the realities/planes/areas of existence.

Religion is an important part of the setting and plot.

She also took a potshot at Daggerspell by Katharine Kerr, but I reminded her about the Elf question.

And now, I will admit that I'm on-line on Christmas Day by publishing this. Merry Christmas!

The Coldfire Trilogy (Black Sun Rising, When True Night Falls, Crown of Shadows) by C S Friedman.

Are there any of the other Tolkien races (Dwarfs, Halflings, Orcs, Trolls, Ents, Dragons) in the worlds?

How racially diverse is the ensemble?

One of Katherine Kurtz's Deryni series (which is a clear front-runner in my mind for having elves-that-aren't-called-elves)?

Or if not, is the culture of the ensemble cast reflective of (derivative of?) any genuine earth culture? If so, does it appear to be Celtic of some sort?

Oops, forgot to mention that it's part of a trilogy. Why don't I answer questions for the whole set - makes it easier

Are there any other Tolkien races?

There are-

Steph just jumped the gun with The Dragonbone Chair trilogy, otherwise known as Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn.

She's never even read it.

How's that for mind-reading?

To finish off the questions:

There were dwarves that weren't called dwarves, but fit the same niche (though some of them were sailors).

The human cultures (and the ensemble) were _very_ diverse, and mostly modelled off Earth cultures (English, Viking, Welsh...) plus some eskimos up in the mountains.

This was Tad Williams back when he could write interesting stories with lots of characters and plots that spread all over the place but _went somewhere_. Then he started writing sprawling stories that would have been good if they were half as long. Maybe a third.

In my humble opinion.

Right.

Because Stephanie spoiled our fun, I'm starting a _new_ guessing game (part 4) and banning her from it. Details will be in my next blog.
